Theft of Catalytic Converters continues to increase – we have the solution

The theft of catalytic converters has doubled over the last three years according to a BBC report this morning (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-24811143) , fuelled by rises in global prices for platinum and other precious metals. Catalytic converters (CATs) have been fitted in the exhaust of the majority of diesel cars and vans since 2001. By chemical reaction CATs substantially reduce harmful pollutants from the exhaust. On vans, the diesel oxidation catalyst is often integrated with the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and there is anecdotal evidence that these are also being stolen for their scrap value too. So not only do you have to replace the catalytic converter but also the diesel particulate filter.

So where are the precious metals?
The metal casing of the catalytic convertor contains a ceramic honeycombed structure providing a large surface area for the exhaust gases to flow across. This structure is coated with platinum, palladium and rhodium, the catalysts in the chemical reaction, which reduce the harmful emissions from your exhaust.
You would be surprised how easy it is for thieves to remove the catalytic converter especially from light commercial vehicles due to their increased ground clearance to the underside of the body. If you can easily get under your van, so can the thief!

What can I do?
There are two main ways a CATLOC® protects; either by securing to the CAT itself and linking to the vehicle via a bespoke attachment method, or by shielding the most vulnerable area of the CAT, denying easy access and preventing removal.

All systems are UK manufactured using marine grade stainless steel for strength and durability, and supplied with high security anti-tamper fixings and the CATLOC® ISR® system as standard.

The CATLOC® ISR® system is a Police Approved, Thatcham Accredited catalytic converter marking and registration system. This etches a unique code into the CAT which is recorded onto the ISR®. This means the CAT can be traced back to a vehicle and convictions secured if found in the possession of a thief, dramatically reducing the desirability of a stolen CAT.

All systems have been designed for ease of installation and are supplied with all of the required fixings and fully illustrated instructions. Installation typically takes between 15-45 minutes.

In addition to the universal model available we also offer a range of bespoke options to fit specific makes and models of van. Check out our security section at http://www.vanax.co.uk/security/catalyst-protectors. We are happy to supply for self-fit or why not book online for us to fit either in our Glasgow workshops or via our mobile fitting teams.
