  NHS Contract Award for Vanax

Vanax have been awarded the contract to design and convert a Peugeot Boxer LWB High Roof vehicle for use as a mobile retinal screening unit.

Following lengthy consultation, the final specification was agreed which included the fitting of a passenger tail lift, 240v air conditioning system, 240v outlets for running computer equipment, retinal screening cameras and refrigeration facilities. To allow for mobile use when a 240v supply was not available, a mobile whisper generator was also added to ensure that screenings could take place wherever they were required.

The vehicle was full insulated to guarantee an ambient temperature for both patients and staff and was split into two sections - a comfortable reception area and an examination room for retinal screenings. Additional storage was fitted with wall units in both the reception and examination areas, all of which were keyed alike for user friendliness and additional security. An additional sliding internal door was fitted to ensure comfort for patients in the waiting area no matter the weather conditions. In order to minimise the risk of infection the vehicle was finished in a non-slip, heavy duty, MRSA resistant floor covering and light grey polypropylene wall panels.

A panic alarm was also fitted for NHS staff safety. When activated, the vehicle alarm sounded, together with two low profile blue strobe lights fitted to the roof of the vehicle. The existing retinal screening camera and table supplied by the NHS had to be adapted for mobile use with the table being fitted with uprated wheels and the camera unit secured to an extended table top to allow for transportation between sites.

"This was one of our most complicated conversion to date." said Managing Director, Johnny Dunne. "Although previous conversions had been done by other coachbuilders, we were asked to rewrite the existing plans to take account of the need for wheelchair access and disease control. No easy thing at the best of time but even more difficult due to the limited space available. We feel we managed to accommodate all the requirements which were requested and look forward to assisting the NHS in future contracts of a similar nature."
